In 1858, the Crow
school/church was built on the Philip Lewis place on Lewisville Road. In 1870,
the location moved to the Ike Merritt (later, Albert Payne) place. It was named
the Evergreen Union Church and a Sunday School was organized.
In 1889, land was donated to the church by Mr. Merrill Monk, the
first Sunday School Superintendent. A new building was built for use as both a
church and a schoolhouse. In those days, the pastor usually came from
Haynesville.
In 1915, four acres of land were bought from R.L. Lewis for a new
church and a cemetery. The church was two stories, with the second story used
for Masonic meetings. The community provided the labor and much of the lumber
was sawed by W.M. and W.S. Martin.
In 1920, the Baptist Church was reorganized.
In 1939, the church saw the need for a larger church with classroom
space. With much help from John D. Mims, the new church was built. The
community helped to demolish the old building and make cement blocks for the new
one. The first service was on February 3, 1946. Roy Akin and Carvelis Johnson
were pastors at that time. Evergreen is still operated as a Union Church. |
