Records place the beginning of the church back to 1852, though there was probably a church for some years before that time.  The first church, a two-room log building, used one room for church activities and the other as a community school.  A sign on the church says that the Methodists were established in1850 and the Baptists in 1876.  After the building was burned down on May 31, 1885, services were held at the Masonic Lodge for a while.  In 1886, a new church was built.  That church is now the auditorium of the present church.
The church had to be repaired in 1912 after it was blown off its foundation by a tornado.  Changes and repairs were also made under the leadership of Rev. B.H. Andrews in 1936-37.  Three classrooms and a fellowship hall were constructed in 1950 under the leadership of Rev. W.D. Milton, with additional rooms added in 1954 while Rev. J.H. Midyett was pastor.
