When the former members of the
Zion A.M.E. church found themselves without a church, Bishop A.P. Shaw
helped them to start a new church. A church was acquired on Marks
Street in 1937. The first pastor, Rev. A.B. Harris, called it the
church without a Bible, without a chair, without a hymnal, and without
members. At the first service, twenty-six members were added to
the roll. The community was surveyed and a church school was started.
The church was destroyed by
hurricane Betsy in 1965. D.S. Rev. W.S.P. Norris got $17,000 from
the Board of Missions so that the church could be rebuilt. Rev. Andrew
J. Douglas was the pastor at that time. |
