The church was organized in
the 1860s right after freedom of slavery (the church gives the date as
1863). The first pastor was also the first member, Anthony Ross.
The first church was built from pickets from the swamp, so it was called
Shanny Ross Chapel. The current site of the church and cemetery
were donated by Victor Forteir on April 8, 1867.
That first church was burned
down in 1904 while Rev. Joseph Jones was the pastor. A new church
was built in 1907 under the leadership of Rev. A.B. Harris. That
church was destroyed by a storm on September 29, 1915. The third
church was built in 1916 under the direction of Rev. T.B. Cooper.
The present church was remodeled
in 1956 under the leadership of Rev. C.D. Small. |
