Newell Chapel was
established in the early days of the Mississippi Mission Conference, which
first met in December 1865. Its design was to educate African-Americans
for the ministry. The original structure stood where the current
church now stands.
The church was rebuilt
in 1886. Under the leadership of Rev. G.C. Hayward, it was remodeled
in 1917.
In 1971, the present
church was built.
The church’s first anniversary
celebration, for its 111th anniversary, was held while Rev. Nathaniel Perry
served as pastor. |
