The church property originally
belonged to Chief Tusquahoma and his Choctaw tribe, being part of four
square miles granted to them by the Spanish government. When they
left the area, they sold it to Stephen W. Maddox on January 10, 1820 for
$600. A copy of that deed is located in the church.
The church itself is believed
to have started when Lewis Griggs moved his family from Alabama to Louisiana
in 1860. He is thought to have founded the church after his arrival
in the area. The current church building was constructed around 1932.
Longtime members recall having revivals lasting as long as two weeks in
those early days. The Bible classes were held outdoors under the
oaks.

How to Get There:
Take exit 101 from I-20, head south on Hwy 151, and then turn right
onto Hwy 144 (just after the RR tracks) towards Eros. The church
is 1.7 miles down Hwy 144 (about 6 miles north of Eros). The church
and cemetery are on the right side of the road. |
