The church property originally belonged to Chief Tusquahoma and his Choctaw tribe, being part of four square miles granted to them by the Spanish government.  When they left the area, they sold it to Stephen W. Maddox on January 10, 1820 for $600.  A copy of that deed is located in the church.
The church itself is believed to have started when Lewis Griggs moved his family from Alabama to Louisiana in 1860.  He is thought to have founded the church after his arrival in the area.  The current church building was constructed around 1932.  Longtime members recall having revivals lasting as long as two weeks in those early days.  The Bible classes were held outdoors under the oaks.
