Methodist circuit riders first visited
the area in the early 1800s. In 1839, the parish donated one acre
of lands for a Methodist church. Land was also given to the church
by Mr. and Mrs. David Arent. Church records in 1880 show that money
was being raised to build a church. At that time, services
were being held at the Masonic Hall. The pastor of the circuit at
that time was Rev. J.H. Patterson. By 1884, completion of the
church was at hand and a Sunday School was started. The church was
damaged by a storm in 1886 and had to be rebuilt.
To illustrate the change in
times, several members were expelled in 1892 after having a dance and
dancing.
Electric lights were added to
the church in 1918. In the 1920s, an annex was made to the church
to provide for educational rooms.
Groundbreaking for the current
facilities took place in 1953. The fellowship hall and church school
were completed first. The parsonage was built at another location.
The current sanctuary was completed in 1959. The note was burned
on May 23, 1965. Additional work done in 1965 includes work on the
parsonage, a nursery, offices, a library, and a drive-through carport.
Land for new facilities was purchased with financial help from Mrs. Cleo
Taylor Aulds. |
