At the dawn of the 20th century, the area
was growing in population. Citizens such as the Spurlocks and the Jones'
had been worshiping at the Mt. Nebo church, but decided to build a house of
worship closer to their homes. The Bethel Methodist Protestant Church was
organized in 1904 and a wooden church soon constructed. It was
placed on a circuit with the Mt. Nebo church.
They continued as Methodist Protestant congregations
until 1953. In that year, under the leadership of Rev. Doug McGuire, they
became aligned with the Methodist Church and were added to the
Downsville circuit.
Current and former parishioners and pastors celebrate
their heritage at a homecoming held each September. |
