The Gunter family
allowed the use of their land for the church for many years. In the 1960s, a
survey and proper payment for the church was made. Two children, who died from
eating poison berries around 1960, are buried about 300 yards from the church.
The earliest grave in the cemetery next to the church dates back to 1880. The
church possibly had its beginnings sometime around then. The land for the
cemetery was donated by Jim Glaze.
The first church, built in the second half of the 19th
century, had a covered entry. Part of that original building is still in use
today, though it has been remodeled and improved over the years. Though the
wall paneling was added with the floor joists were replaced, the foyer and front
of the church is original.
The William Thorn Taylor family greatly contributed to the early
life of the church. It included five brothers and five sisters that served the
church.
In
1900, Rev. W.H. Wingfield revised the roll. No church records before that time
have survived. By that time, the land around the church was all pasture and
farm land. |
