Several of the members of Henning
Memorial started the movement to create a new church in Sulphur.
The first service was held on January 20, 1963 at the Fox Theater.
Rev. Louis Hoffpauir was the first pastor. The following month, on
February 10, the congregation bought the Church of Christ building at 423
Live Oak St. for $5,000. There were 104 charter members by April
14, 1963.
Plans soon began to build a
church of their own. They raised $9,000 to get things started, and
the new church was completed in 1964 under the leadership of Rev. A.M.
Martin. The first service was held on November 22, 1964. In
1967, a parsonage on East Carlton was built at a cost of $20,000.
Under the leadership of Rev.
Charles Humphrey, the church bought property in 1974 on N. Huntington Street
for $15,000. That debt was paid off in six months. During the
ministry of Rev. Melvin Ray Holt, Sr. (1987-93), all of the church’s debts
were paid. |
