The Maplewood community began
as a rental community during World War II. It was home to numerous
families that worked in various factories working on the war effort.
The community was later absorbed into the city of Sulphur.
A group of residents got together
and chartered the Maplewood Methodist Church on May 28, 1944. For
the first three years, the congregation met in various public buildings
in the area. They obtained their first facilities in 1947.
The first service was held on Easter Sunday of that year. The building,
which had been the cafeteria for a construction company, was adapted to
include a sanctuary, classrooms, an office, a kitchen, and an assembly
room.
A temporary education building
was put up in the early 1950s. It was replaced with a more permanent
building completed in 1961. A fellowship hall was completed
in 1974. The fellowship hall was used for worship services when the
sanctuary was torn down in 1983. The new sanctuary was completed
in 1984. In 1958, a three bedroom parsonage was completed three blocks
from the church. |
