A small school was built about
1890, near the home of Charles Clark Hill. Soon after, Sunday School
classes began in Mr. Hill’s home. Fred Giggar brought in Rev. Norton
and a church was organized. The first services in the 1900s were
held in homes and in the hotel lobby. The earliest recorded pastoral
appointment was Rev. William Bennett in 1906.
A church was built in 1914 on
Fifth Avenue. When it was destroyed by a fire on November 15, 1969,
plans began for the construction of a new church in the same location.
Services were held in the education building next door (recently dedicated
on April 16, 1967) during construction. Groundbreaking services were
held on October 25, 1970, and the first service in the completed church
was led by Bishop Crutchfield less than a year later on May 9, 1971. |
