Sir Herbert Wesley (Westley)
of Westleigh, Devon, married cousin Elizabeth, daughter of Robert de Wellesley
of Dangan Castle, Ireland. They had a son named Bartholomew (1596-1670).
Bartholomew married a daughter of Sir Henry Colley and had a son named
John (c.1636-1670) (picture
below).
Although never formally ordained, John served as a missionary and vicar. He was known for departing from the liturgy and practiced the Independent form of worship. Although imprisoned several times for his nonconformist views, he continued to preach. John married the daughter of the famed Puritan, John White, and they had a son named Samuel (1662-1735). Samuel married Susanna Annesley, daughter of Rev. Samuel Annesley (another nonconformist). He was ordained a deacon in 1688 and received his first parish in 1691. About five years later, the family moved to Epworth. Several years later, on the 17th of June 1703, Samuel and Susanna's 11th child was born at the Epworth parsonage. |
| John was their 4th son. They would have 19 children in all, though many died in infancy. Samuel baptized the weakly infant a few hours after his birth. His name, John Benjamin, came from two earlier children that had died. His younger brother Charles (1707-1788) would later become one of the world's most prolific hymn writers. | |
