Archives & History . . . . . . . . Louisiana Conference
Archives

Welcome to the Louisiana Conference Archives for the United Methodist Church. This web site will present information on the Conference Archives at Centenary College and the repository at Dillard University.

After being located in the Sam Peters Research building on the campus of Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana for almost a decade, the Archives returned to Magale Library in 2001.
Some materials are still stored at the Peters building.  To locate the site, go to the Directions page. A smaller amount of material is located at the university library of Dillard University in New Orleans.   We now have an inventory of Dillard's United Methodist material online.

The collection consists of the archives of the Louisiana Annual Conference of the Methodist Church from 1847, collegiate records from 1825, several manuscripts collections, and a large accumulation of material from Shreveport and northwestern Louisiana. Included in this last category is the archive of the North Louisiana Historical Association.

The Centenary College website has several pages devoted to the Archives.  In addition, the Archives will be putting some of its materials online in a "Digital Library".  Several works are there now, such as a document by Rev. H.L. Johns on early Louisiana Conference history and women's organization journals from 1917 and 1918.  If you'd like to transcribe LA UMC historical material to be placed online, please let us know.

An inventory of the collection is being made.

Status Report: 2003-2004

List of Louisiana UM Local Church Histories at the Archives
At a couple of occasions (1976, 1984), Louisiana Conference churches have been urged to send in copy of their local church history.  This online list shows the local church histories on file at the archives as of summer 1997.

List of Archival UM Content at the Archives
The contents of the materials stored at the archives has been inventoried by the archivist and is available online.

Help Needed

The picture (left) shows the location for boxes of material in the Archives.  Due to a lack of space in the basement room, they are located in the attic.  An attempt is being made to convert the area into a climate-controlled space.  More information will be posted later on this effort.
Archivist
The archivist for the Samuel Peters Research Center is Barbara Moore. While she may be able to answer simple requests, please try not to request a large amount of data. By Appointment Only, a visit to the Archives yourself would be recommended if you need a lot of information. She can be reached via phone (318-869-5462), email (archives@centenary.edu), or standard postal mail (P.O. Box 41188, Shreveport, LA 71134-1188).

This facility subscribes to the Joint Statement of Access to original Research Materials developed cooperatively by the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Society of American Archivists. A statement of policies governing the use of manuscripts and archival materials in this facility is available to those wishing to do research.
