In 1905, Mrs. Myra Brent Wilton
began meeting with interested persons in her home at 1509 Hardtner St.,
Alexandria. She was convinced that God would enable them to build
a church in the south Alexandria area. Organized as a mission, they
were assigned Rev. Squire Watson as their first pastor. Mrs. Wilton
bought property at the corner of Overton and Turner and donated it to the
Methodist Episcopal Church.
The present church building
is the third edifice to be built on that property. The original church
(Wilton Chapel) was built there in 1909
(though the
cornerstone gives the date erected as 1903).. It was replaced in 1927
by the second structure. In 1947, an Army chapel was purchased from
Camp Claiborne and renovated. |
