On August 23, 1859, Zenon and Lousinda
Aymond sold four acres of land to the Oak Grove Methodist Church for $5.
The description of the land, at the southwest corner of the Hugh Bailey
tract, mentioned that a meeting house was already located on the property.
A tree later fell on that original
church and it was rebuilt. An old story says that about 1885 a drunk
spent the night on some cottonseed stored in the church and accidentally
set it afire. The third church was torn down in 1914 or 1915.
While the first three churches were built within the boundaries of the
cemetery, they decided to build the fourth one outside in 1915. In
spring 1939, the fourth church was destroyed by a tornado, though the piano
survived. The current church was built in 1968. |
