The church began sometime in the 1800s with Miss Harriet Harvey, Irene Chapman,
Mary Lou Freeman, Emma Jones, and Kate Ruiers. Services began under a cotton
gin shed, led by Rev. George Washington. Services later moved to Grand Ecore,
on the west side of the Red River. A small church was built on land donated by
Joe Herny, Sr.
People on the east side of the river wanted their own church, since
crossing the river was not an easy task in those days. Five young ladies raised
money to buy the land. The cornerstone of the church dates its organization to
1885.
The congregation purchased land from the DeBluiex family and built
the second church building under the leadership of
Rev. G.W. Shelly in 1891.
On February 11, 1925, the church and parsonage were destroyed in a
fire. All church records up to that time were destroyed.
The current
church was completed in June 1959 under the leadership of Rev. E.P. Riley. |
