The St. Peter Methodist
Episcopal Church was established in 1865. It began as an outreach
of the Methodist Episcopal Church Missionary Society of New York.
They established St. Peter as a school for African-Americans. It
was the only school for African-Americans in Ascension Parish in those
days. The first church was built in 1866. The original pastor
was Rev. A. Kennedy.
After the church was destroyed
by a storm, it was rebuilt in 1895 under the leadership of Rev. C.D. Shallowhorne.
The architect for the new white wooden church was J.N. Fitzgerald.
As the church begins the
21st century, it is working on renovating the church to its former glory
under the leadership of Rev. Sonya Lars. The congregation also continues
to focus its ministries on evangelism, spiritual renewal, and community
outreach. |
