The Pecan Island United Methodist
Church began just after the turn of the century. Rev. Martin Hebert,
of the French Mission was the first to venture out to the small community.
Located over 40 miles from Abbeville, the only way to get there was by
boat. Evidently Rev. Hebert made an impact on the community, because
the church began in 1910 when property was given for a church building
to be constructed. Over the years, it was a part of several different
circuits.
In 1954, a road was finally
built to Pecan Island. Up until that time, the minister had to get
there by boat. Sometimes the minister would hitch a ride on the mail
boat and spend the weekend at the Island.
The wood-framed church was replaced
in the early 1960's with a brick building. The old church was sold
to the Baptist church next door, who still use it as their education building.
An educational building was added in the early 1980's. |
