The Gibson Church was built in the small community of Gibson, midway between Morgan City and Houma. Built in 1849, it is one of the oldest churches in Louisiana. Its long history includes serving as a hospital during the Civil War and being used as a school. It was also called St. Anna's Mission (by the Episcopals who used the facility on alternate weekends for years) and the Sycamore Church. Although church services ceased for a time in the mid-20th century, services were resumed in 1976. At that time, a record book dating back to the 1850s was found and sent to the archives. Services continued until 1995, when the church was discontinued.
