The church building, which had
belonged to the southern branch of Methodism, was taken by the northern
branch during the Civil War for use as a church for African-Americans.
Rev. Thomas Kennedy began services for the Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church
on Christmas day, 1865.
Over the years, the church has
been damaged by storms such as hurricanes Betsy and Andrew. The congregation
has faithfully repaired the damage and continued to worship at the church.
The church has also gone through remodeling over the years. A service
of consecration was held at Asbury on October 18, 1970. Bishop Aubrey
Walton and the pastor, Rev. George M. Alfred, officiated.
The Asbury church is part of
the Historic District of Franklin. |
